French Immersion

The study of French is an important part of the secondary school curriculum. French is not only one of Canada’s two official languages, but is also widely used around the world. The Algoma District School Board offers a French Immersion Programme at Sir James Dunn and a Francais programme at Chapleau High School.

Sir James Dunn C.& V.S.

At Sir James Dunn courses are offered in grades 9 through 12, with a particular emphasis on mathematics and science courses at the senior grades. The teachers in the programme are experienced and dedicated and offer a wide variety of course: francais, geographie, histoire, affaires et commerce, citoyennete, carrieres, anthropologie, sciences, chimie, physique, biologie, calcul, gestion des donnees, geometrie, and so forth.

Upon successfully completing 13 courses offered through the French Immersion programme, including 4 credits in Francais, students will be awarded a bilingual certificate.

The French Immersion programme is an integral part of Sir James Dunn and students in the programme participate in all activities, sports, and committees along with the rest of the school population.

Contact Sir James Dunn C. & V.S. at 705.945.7177 for more information about the French Immersion programme.

Chapleau High School

Chapleau High School has a long tradition of offering a stimulating Francais programme to graduates from the francophone feeder school. Two experienced and caring teachers offer the total of four possible credits at the academic level for grades 9 and 10 and at the university level for grades 11 and 12. Students perfect their skills and knowledge of receptive and expressive language while studying a wide variety of classics and contemporary French literature from Canada and many other francophone countries. The study and appreciation of culture is an integral part of these courses.
