The Algoma District School Board and Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board supports the Ministry of Education’s focus on First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students.  With this focus, the boards are committed to work with our First Nation, Métis, and Inuit partners to support our First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students.  One of the strategies identified in the Ministry of Education document, Ontario First Nation, Métis and Inuit Education Policy Framework, is that school boards work in collaboration with First Nation, Métis, and Inuit communities and organizations, parents, and students to integrate this Policy Framework into school board planning.
 
The Algoma District School Board and Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board have come together to form a First Nation, Métis, and Inuit Education Committee. The members will include First Nation, Métis, and Inuit parents, elders, students and school board staff. The committee will  work together to support the policy framework, implement the strategies and share in global discussions to improve student learning.
 
Purpose
·    To improve achievement among First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students, close the gap between First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students and non - First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students in the areas of literacy and numeracy, retention/graduation rates and advancement to post secondary education.
 
·   To bring awareness among teachers and school support staff of varied learning styles of First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students and First Nation, Métis, and Inuit cultures, histories and perspectives.
 
·   Provide support for school staff to acquire knowledge of First Nation, Métis, and Inuit student learning profiles, and to realign programs and teaching styles to support First Nation, Métis, and Inuit student learning.
 
This mandate specifically includes:
Ø  Improving First Nation, Métis, and Inuit student achievement
Ø  Increase cultural awareness, Indigenous knowledge
Ø  Increase awareness of historical First Nation, Métis, and Inuit perspectives
Ø  Provide guidance and support for meaningful respectful communication practices
Ø  Provide a forum to share First Nation, Métis, and Inuit resources (human resources, materials)  and partnerships
Ø  Promote and strengthen respectful meaningful partnerships with our First Nation, Métis, and Inuit communities
