About us

The North Shore Board of Education established Rockhaven School for Exceptional Children for pupils with developmental disabilities.  At present there are 27 pupils enrolled.
The concept of educating the exceptional student originated with the parents in Elliot Lake in 1963.  Under the auspices of Mr. Wilkinson, then Director of Education, six pupils moved into two rooms at Westhill School.  In 1965 Percy Brown, a town official, found a place for them at the Lutheran Church where they remained until 1969 when the North Shore Board of Education took on the responsibility of education for these students.
Over the years, Rockhaven has adapted and expanded in order to meet the needs of a changing population.  Changes, even at the best of times, are a challenge.  Often time seems to be our worst enemy in trying to accomplish many of the goals we believe are vital for a successful life.
Rockhaven, is first and foremost an educational institution.   Emphasis is placed on a core program that is  functional academic in nature.  It is essential that all of our students have an opportunity to grow and develop physically, emotionally and intellectually.  Today the opportunities for the special need students are increasing.  It is important to instil in them that they have worth and a valuable place in our society.  Independence and the development of skills to care for themselves and to adapt to new situations are of the highest priority.
We believe that many of the values held by our students, such as love, trust and a willingness to share and understand, are attributes that they can teach to others.  It is to this end that we hope our students integrate to live satisfying and productive lives in their communities.

Principal’s Message
Rockhaven is an alternate place to learn! The school and the staff are here to help students reach their full potential. The staff believes that Rockhaven is here for the students and they are the centre of the school. Each student is assessed as an individualized that can learn and give something back to society. We look at each student’s strengths and abilities that can be encouraged and enhanced at the school. The school is our community and we invite parents and community members to come and visit Rockhaven at any time.
