Welcome everyone to the beginning of a new school year.  If you are a returning student, welcome back and if you are new to the school – welcome to the family.  Mr. Forsyth and I, together with our excellent teachers and superb support staff, are eager to commence the semester.  We look forward to working with every family to ensure that each student is able to meet their full potential. There has been much work over the summer that has gone into preparing the school and the classes for your arrival.

Mr. Gillis and his team have once again worked very hard to ensure that the building is spotless and ready for learning.  The Algoma District School Board has made another major investment in improving the infrastructure of ELSS.  New bleachers have been installed in the gymnasium complete with ELSS signage and school colours.  As well, the entire gym received a fresh coat of paint and a reorganization of the school’s many award banners. In addition, the gym floor has been re-finished for the beginning of the school year.

Regardless of the looming unrest in education provincially, you can be assured that your teachers are ready and prepared to provide you with the best education possible.  ELSS has always maintained an excellent reputation in all areas of EQAO testing throughout the district and province.  Our teachers and support staff are second to none as they challenge your strengths and support your needs every day in order to tap your full potential.

We are fortunate, that despite a declining enrollment, ELSS continues to provide a wide breadth of programming to ensure a pathway for every student.  We offer pathways for students preparing for university, college and the workplace.  In addition, our specialist high skills major (SHSM) programs in construction and hospitality & tourism permit our students the opportunity to build a foundation of sector-focused knowledge and skills before graduating and entering apprenticeships training, college, university or an entry-level position in the workplace.   In fact, we now have a state of the art industrial kitchen and Bistro to support the hospitality and tourism program.

If you are interested in workplace experiences, our cooperative education program can make connections in the community for the career of your choice.  Our network of community partners is vast and our teachers are experienced and knowledgeable in work related issues to ensure a successful and worthwhile job placement.

In addition, the student support services at ELSS provide timely and helpful assistance for those students requiring extra help.  Please be sure to take advantage of the guidance office, resource room, student success room and the school counsellor when necessary.

Literacy at ELSS will also see a new initiative. As a result of discussions among our teaching faculty and evidenced based research concerning the connection between reading proficiency and student success, we will be conducting comprehensive reading assessments for all grade 9 students.  Our teachers will be using Fountas & Pinnell to determine appropriate strategies to improve reading and comprehension skills to enhance classroom performance and future success in life.

We are also fortunate to have an Aboriginal Resource Center at ELSS to support our First Nations, Inuit and Métis students at the school.  It is located on the first floor in Room 122, be sure to check out the regular lunch hour activities.

ELSS is very proud of its Family & Friends atmosphere.  We work hard to ensure everyone feels welcome and is able to achieve success.  We believe in developing a growth mindset in our students and staff.  A growth mindset is one that welcomes challenges and looks at failures as opportunities for growth. In order to support a growth mindset, our staff is committed to ensuring the learning environment is safe, inclusive and welcoming. This will permit students to take learning risks as they strive to achieve goals and realize their full potential.

ELSS offers a tremendous amount of support and opportunity and we hope that every student takes advantage of them.  If you have any questions or concerns throughout the school year, please feel free to contact myself or Mr. Forsyth.  We look forward to your arrival in September.
