Algoma District School Board wins $12 thousand dollars to go towards helping students get active!

Early in March (2015) at GoodLife Fitness in Sault Ste Marie, our Board learned that we were the winners of $12 thousand dollars in the GoodLife Kids Foundation, Win4Kids contest.

 

Winners were determined based on number of votes generated through an online voting ballot. All of Algoma District school communities, partners, staff and students, friends and families were congratulated and thanked for taking the time to vote, contributing to ADSB’s win in the second prize category.

 

On the line was a share of $100,000 worth of grant money in the following prize categories: one $25,000 national prize for the organization with the highest number of votes, one of three prizes of $12,000, one of three prizes of $8,000 and/or one of three prizes of $5,000.

 

ADSB rallied for online votes for just over a month. Algoma District School Board’s Brain Boosters program was selected as a finalist in the GoodLife Kids Foundation National Win 4 Kids contest.

 

Brain Boosters is an initiative that has students and teachers in elementary classrooms in the ADSB taking part in five-minute long exercise routines. The routines are available on DVD and each Brain Booster session contains unique workouts that kids can follow safely in the comfort of their own classroom. Teachers have the ability to access these DVDs at any time during the course of the school day to get students up out of their seats, get their blood flowing and their brains reengaged!

 

Davey Taylor, ADSB’s Well-Being Special Assignment teacher accepted the cheque (pictured above) on behalf of the Board and shared how pleased he was with the results, given that we were up against communities from Newfoundland to British Columbia. He confirmed that the $12 thousand dollars will help to ensure that all ADSB elementary classrooms will have access to the Brain Boosters DVDs.
