"Youthesoo" held in SSM with a focus on empowering youth. ADSB Student Trustees played key role in planning the day.

In May (2015), five thousand Grade 7 to 10 students from across the district attended Youthesoo, Sault Ste. Marie’s first WeDay-style event, at the Essar Centre. This empowering event for youth was brought to Sault Ste. Marie through the collaborative efforts of the Algoma District School Board (ADSB), Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB), Algoma Arts Festival Association and international charity and educational partner Free the Children. Student Trustees and co-chairs of the ADSB Student Senate Maya Werner and Madison MacLachlan (pictured left with guest speaker Craig Kielburger) represented ADSB students throughout the Youthesoo planning process and funded part of this year’s event from Project ABCD funds.

 

Maya and Madison spoke at the event and shared the success of youth initiatives in the district, including the success of Action for Building a Community that is Drug free (ABCD). Like Youthesoo, ABCD empowers youth and reminds them that their choices matter and that they should look beyond themselves to their local and global communities.

 

Along with Student Trustees from our co-terminus board, Maya and Madison led the audience in a pledge that included a committment to "...believe in one self, to look for opportunities to give back locally, to remain compassionate and to embark on a life journey to effect positive global change."
