Breakfast Program

Students from Algoma District School Board (ADSB) will once again benefit from a generous donation made by United Steelworkers (USW) Local 2251. A cheque in the amount of $11,750 was presented at a recent Principals’ meeting. The donation will support the ADSB Breakfast programs and will be divided so that all ADSB schools, both local and district wide, will receive a portion.

Mike DePratt, President of USW Local 2251, was on hand to make the cheque presentation on behalf of the United Steelworkers. Algoma District School Board Director of Education Lucia Reece, Superintendent Joe Maurice and Principal Tim Pearson (representing ADSB elementary and secondary principals) accepted the donation. Tim shared with DePratt just how many students access the breakfast program at his school. It is a much needed and sought after program within the school and Tim expressed his appreciation to Mike and Local 2251 sharing that a program such as this cannot continue to run without the support of community and agency partners.

These kinds of donations go a long way to support the purchase of fresh fruit, milk, yoghurt, cereals and other healthy options, much needed by some students who arrive at school without breakfast or lunch for the day

Studies have shown that children whose nutritional needs are met have fewer attendance and discipline problems, and their ability to learn is enhanced.

Last year, USW Local 2251, donated $10,000 to the ADSB Breakfast Program.
