French as a Second Language (FSL) Programs - What and Where

Core French is an integral part of the regular elementary school curriculum. The Core French program is mandatory from Grades 4 to 8 for all students in English-language elementary schools.Students entering Grade 4 must receive French instruction in every year from Grade 4 to Grade 8, and must have accumulated a minimum of 600 hours of French instruction by the end of Grade 8.

In an Extended French program, French must be the language of instruction for a minimum of 25 per cent of the total instructional time at every grade level of the program. Extended French programs must include the study of French as a second language and the study of at least one other subject taught in French. Extended French programs must provide a minimum of 1260 hours of instruction in French by the end of Grade 8.

For subjects other than FSL that are taught in French in an Extended French program, the expectations in each grade are those outlined in teh English-language curriculum policy documents.

In a French Immersion program, French must be the language of instruction for a minimum of 50 per cent of the instructional time at every grade level of the program. Immersion programs must include the study of French as a second language and the study of at least two other subjects taught in French. Immersion programs must provide a minimum of 3800 hours of instruction in French by the end of Grade 8.

For subjects other than FSL that are taught in French in a French Immersion program, the content and expectations in each grade are those outlined in the English-language curriculum policy documents.

French Immersion is designed specifically for students whose mother tongue is not French. In the French Immersion program students are provided the opportunity to become functionally bilingual through maximum exposure to French.

In our French Immersion program, all communication with parents, including report cards, is in English so that you are well informed of what is happening at your child's school.

At the secondary level, students are required to complete at least one compulsory credit in French offered at the academic or applied stream in grade 9. Students are encouraged to continue to develop their second language skills by selecting further Core French courses in Grades 10 through 12.

At the secondary level, schools may grant a certificate in Extended French if the student has successfully completed the sequence of four courses in Extended French (français) and a minimum of three courses in other subjects taught in French.
