February is Black History Month in Canada. While it had been unofficially recognized in Canada for several decades, in December 1995 the House of Commons officially recognized February as Canadian Black History Month.
As we continue to respond to the results of the ADSB Student Census & Well-Being Survey, and continue to foster inclusive and welcoming learning and working environments, where all students, staff and families see themselves, the Algoma District School Board is encouraging all schools to recognize Canadian Black History Month in morning announcements and classroom learning activities. While we are encouraging learning activities in the month of February, we also recognize that Black History is Canadian History so the integration of learning about Black Canadians and their contributions to Canadian society should be ongoing throughout the year.
The 2026 theme for Black History Month, announced by the Government of Canada, is: “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.” This theme celebrates three decades of Black History Month in Canada by highlighting the enduring contributions of Black Canadians across time.
